First-time essayist executive Matt Sobel’s “Take Me to the River” unfurls in an environment of riddle and fear that appears differently in relation to its surroundings’ rustic quietness. A gay Californian adolescent’s visit to Nebraskan relatives turns more nightmarish than he foreseen, for reasons that he never could have envisioned, as billows of uprooted sexuality float over streaming rivers, rich fields and young ladies on enormous steeds.
